The recent clash between Zelenskyy and Trump / Vance was something unique in the modern history. I don’t remember any US president to belittle an ally on live television like that under any circumstances.
Usually the US president must have the characteristics of a cool-headed, charismatic negotiator. In this meeting we have saw the opposite. And JD Vance, which I considered the first pick for the republican party’s ticket in 2028 does no longer seem the viable and capable option for the job after this one meeting. The guy who resembled Nixon’s charisma and intelligence, suddenly looks like a little baby.
But these are not the important affects on this meeting. The united states must show not only to its allies, but also to he hostile nations that it can be trusted more than its eastern adversaries like China or Russia. Otherwise there is no hope for those countries to trust the US and try to repair their relationship with the US. Now Trump and the Vance just sent a really dangerous message to their allies and the world. When push comes to shove, you’re on your own if you don’t surrender to our terms.
As a result, their allies will immediately start planning on becoming less dependent on the US aid. Some of them will try to repair their relationship with China and Russia, the other ones will increase their defense budget and so forth.
And this is the change of formation that we’ll see in the allies on united states. The hostile nations will see no reason to start building a relationship with the US.
So in my opinion, Zelenskyy might’ve started a chain reaction without knowing it. We will witness the result of this televised meeting for the years to come. And I’m afraid not for the better.
